Hanging in Nelson for Summer? Here’s my fav beach spots..

Living at the top of the South Island between ocean and alps, means we are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches around my home town of Nelson. To the left we are surrounded by the Abel Tasman National Park and to the right the French Pass and Marlborough Sounds and in the middle.. we have a great selection of local beaches to visit if you’re here over the Summer months!! Here’s a few of my fav local hangout’s - for basking in the sun, paddle-boarding or surfing:

• Tahunanui Beach - my local - a great flat, sandy beach with a sweeping bay and sand bar - great for learning to paddle-board! MOANA SUP have boards and kayaks for rent and for sale.

• Rabbit Island Beach - just a 10min drive out of Nelson heading towards Mapua or the Abel Tasman NP - ideal spot for beach BBQ’s, beach cricket and long lazy beach hangs!!

• Cable Bay - around 20min from Nelson heading toward Blenheim, turn off to follow the road to the end - you have an estuary on one side and a stoney beach on the other - nice and sheltered and perfect for swimming and kayaking too.

• Golden Bay - hands down my favourite collection of beaches in NZ! Tata Beach, Pohara, Ligar Bay, Totaranui, Onetahuti, Awaroa… get amongst it!! A playground for water sports, golden sand beaches, sun-soaked bays and calm oceans - perfect for swimming, picnics and all the water sports!
